Emergency Preparedness Fair Set for April 23rd.

Floods, severe thunder storms, tornadoes and even ice storms are constant reminders that west Georgia is not at all insulated against the threats of severe weather.

Add to that the other threats that could beset a family, such as a fire, and the importance of being prepared for a disaster is evident.

That’s the inspiration behind the second annual West Georgia Emergency Preparedness Fair, set for Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW Fairgrounds in Carrollton. Parking and admission are free.

“Learning what you can do to prepare yourself and your loved ones for an emergency can make a tremendous difference when disaster strikes,” said Dr. Jason Mount, a board-certified emergency physician with Carrollton Emergency Physicians and an organizer of the West Georgia Emergency Preparedness Fair. “If you suddenly had to leave your home right now, what would you bring with you? Where are your important papers? Would you have enough food, water or medical supplies?”

The community-based event brings together numerous local agencies and businesses that can provide detailed information on how to prepare for a wide range of disasters, from finding affordable housing if displaced from one’s residence to preparing to survive without electricity and running water for several days. Healthcare professionals will also be available to provide a number of free health screenings.

Several local agencies, including Carroll County Fire Rescue, the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carrollton Police Department and more also expect to be on hand, offering tours and demonstrations of their equipment. If weather and calls permit, a helicopter from AirLife Georgia also will fly in for the event.

Jan Umberger, another event organizer, said the fair is still looking for additional agencies and businesses interested in participating in this year’s fair.

“People are surprised at what they can bring to the table to help others prepare for an emergency,” said Umberger. “You just have to think about it, and be willing to give part of your Saturday to help. A little advice or guidance can make all the difference in helping someone prepare for the worst.”
