Before the county will receive the money, it must complete an environmental review, which examines the possible impact the project will have on such things as endangered species and archaeological resources. The review is cursory, and the county has already been approved for the funds.
Once in hand, the grant money—which will come from the Department of Natural Resources—will help to further the progress on the paved trails at Little Tallapoosa Park, clearing the way for a public opening later this year. Progress has already been made to clear land for the unpaved trails throughout the park.
News of the grant comes several weeks after inmate and county crews completed the entrance to the park off of Highway 113 near Sharp Creek Elementary School.
“It’s great to see everything moving forward, and it’s certainly great to get our hands on the grant money,” said Parks Director Trudy Crunkleton. “It just means that we’re going to be able to open up the park that much sooner, and that’s great news for county residents.”
