Winter Weather Won't Likely Have Big Impact on Carroll

Anyone who has stepped outside today knows that winter isn't over yet, and parts of Georgia are slated to see wet winter weather on Thursday and Friday that could make for hazardous conditions.

Yet, to the relief of local parents and to the chagrin of their school-aged children, county officials are optimistic that the winter weather isn't likely to have a major impact on Carroll County, and in all likelihood, the roads will be unaffected and the schools will be open on Friday.

News reports show sleet and freezing rain to the south of Carroll County as of midday Thursday, and according to the National Weather Service, the wintery mix could lead to hazardous driving conditions. The freezing rain hasn't skipped Carroll County entirely, but the forecast for the rest of today shows that it should turn to rain by mid afternoon. Tonight, a mixture of sleet and rain is expected, though there should be no sleet accumulation. The low temperature this evening will hover around freezing and then warm up once the sun comes up.

County EMA Director Tim Padgett said his department is always prepared for the worst, but all signs right now are indicating that the worst isn't likely to occur.

"We stay prepared, but I don't see it being an issue right now," he said. "The commercial media is talking like it’s something, but as far as the weather service goes, they’re not saying that it's anything big."

Representatives for both Carrollton City Schools and Carroll County Schools said there was no indication that classes would be cancelled on Friday.

Should the weather take a surprise turn for the worst, residents are urged to remain inside and off the roads if at all possible.
