Carroll Emergency Personnel Learn New Tech, Increase Preparedness

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency visited the Villa Rica Civic Center and Sports Complex Tuesday morning for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plane (WIPP) Road Show.

Emergency personnel from around Carroll County were present at the V-Plex to learn about the truck and the virtually indestructible new containers that are used to transport transuranic waste along Interstate 20 from the Savannah River Site to a WIPP facility near Carlsbad, NM. The display was a proactive opportunity for local emergency personnel to stay abreast of new technology and to increase their preparedness, all in effort to keep everyone along the truck's route safe.

A small black mark in the upper right portion of the frame was the only damage caused when the container was dropped from 30 feet in the air during testing.

A cutaway diagram reveals some of the 42,500-lb container's safety features.
The WIPP truck is always crewed by two drivers and features a cabin space behind the main cockpit.
